Regarding: Dillingham Airfield is an Important Community Resource
I am writing to ask you to support the businesses and community at Dillingham Airfield. It is vital that we maintain civil access at the airfield for the future of aviation in Hawaii. Please support legislation to Save Dillingham Airfield ensuring we maintain civil access to airfield now and for generations to come.
· The economic activity supported by the airport far outweighs the cost of maintaining the facility, more than 12 million in revenue annually is distributed into the North Shore economy through Dillingham Airfield
· The military is interested in maintaining a joint use agreement with a state agency and pursue long term leases
· Future generations of Hawaiians would like to have access to general aviation airports and the career opportunities they provide
In 2019 Dillingham Airfield had over 37,000 air operations. A thriving civil airport with 11 aviation businesses employing about 130 people. Those businesses generated more than 12 million dollars in revenue and attract over 50,000 visitors annually to the airfield and the North Shore. It is home to Pilot training schools, Glider schools, the Civil Air patrol, and skydiving operations. All of these businesses provide entry level training that can lead to careers in aviation.
The HI DOTA has stated they intend to terminate the lease with the United States Army effective June 30, 2021. No input or communication with the tenants or surrounding community was sought prior to this declaration. The economic hardship caused by the Covid-19 Virus will only become greater if we close active thriving businesses. Closure will cause severe economic hardship for the airport tenants, users, and North Shore community. Because of the June 30th Closure date, this legislative session will be the only chance to act on solutions for the airfield.
